Follow Up Without Saying ‘I'm Following Up’

If you couldn’t already tell by our name, we love the art of the follow up.

Following up is arguably one of the most important activities you can do in sales.

Studies show that over 80% of sales take place between the 5th and 12th follow up, which means if you’re not following up, you’re leaving money on the table.

But just because you send a follow up, it doesn’t mean you’ll get an answer.

There’s a difference between a good follow up and a lazy one. Simply sending an email that says ‘I’m following up’ adds no extra value and is likely to leave your follow up unanswered.

So today, we’re breaking down 5 ways to follow up without saying “Following up”.

1. Lead with an Observation 🔍️

One of the most effective ways to follow up is to use something you noticed about your prospect or their company as the reason for the outreach.

Example:

Hey Bob - Congrats on closing your series A this week! I saw the announcement on TechCrunch and instantly thought of you. I know things must be hectic over there, but curious where things are at with your search for a new CRM system?

By using an observation, it shows that you're paying attention to their business, and have a real reason to follow up, outside of just trying to get the sale.

2. Add Context ✍️

Remind your prospect of your previous conversation and the next steps you discussed.

This helps jog their memory about what you discussed and gives you a chance to reiterate the timeline or next steps you agreed on (because you should always agree on next steps).

Example:

Hey Bob - On our call 3 weeks ago, you mentioned you had a few people you needed to talk with internally, and then you'd be interested in setting up the next demo. How does next Tuesday work on your end to schedule that next demo?

3. Provide Updates 👀

If you have new features, pricing plans, or other relevant updates to share, use them as a reason to reach out.

Example:

Hey Bob - We recently released a new AI auto-sync feature in our tool that I think would save you a ton of time in the workflow you walked me through. Do you have 10min next Tuesday to jump on a quick call?

4. Ask for Their Opinion ❓️

People love to share their thoughts and feel heard. Use this to your advantage by asking for your prospect's input on where things are at.

Example:

Hey Bob - Wanted to get your opinion on where things are at with the campaign we discussed last Thursday?

This approach asks for something specific and shows that you value their perspective.

5. Check if it “Makes Sense” 🤔

Sometimes, the simplest approach is the most effective. If you're unsure about the next steps or want to gauge your prospect's interest, just ask if it makes sense to move forward.

Example:

Hey Bob - Does it make sense to set up another call next week to review where things are at?

This straightforward question puts the ball in their court and allows them to explain why moving forward does or doesn’t make sense.

Sales Tip of The Day 💡

When you have someone on the phone who’s interested in what you’re selling, use an ‘assumed ask’ to book the meeting.

Would love to get some time set up next week to dive a bit deeper. Does Monday or Wednesday work better for you?

Make it as easy as possible for them to say yes.
