6 New Year’s Follow Up’s For Prospects Who Told You to Check Back in

If I had a nickel for every time I heard a prospect say “Can you check back in Q1”.

I’d have a whole lotta nickels.

Most of the time it’s just an easy way to brush-off a sales rep. Because the New Year seems so far away. And maybe something will actually change by then.

Well, now we’ve found ourselves in the new year, which means it’s time to follow up with those prospects who told us to.

To avoid getting lost in all of the other Q1 follow-up emails, we put together 3 creative subject lines and emails, just for you.

Let’s dive in…

Subject Lines…

If you can’t get them to open the email, you can’t get them to respond. Here’s 3 of our favorite New Year’s subject lines to catch their attention:

  1.  New Year, New {First Name/Your Product}?" - Clever and personalized.

  2. Haven’t talked since last year, {First Name}! - Use a bit of humor.

  3. {First Name}, This is my Q1 follow up… - Just state the obvious.

The Email Templates…

Email 1: “You asked me to check back in Q1”

Hey First Name,

Happy New Year! You asked me to check back in Q1, and, well… here I am. (:

Since we last spoke… (insert new features, deals or ideas).

Do you have 15 min for a quick check in next week?

This is a great mix of follow up & humor. The key to a great follow up is providing additional value or information.

And humor is a great way to grab their attention.

Email 2: “We talked in the past. Is now a better time.”

Hi First Name,

You looked at our product last year, but didn’t move forward. In my experience, the new year bring new initiatives, so I figured this may be a better time to discuss XYZ.

Is {the problem you solve} an initiative this year?

Reconnecting with prospects who looked at your product in the past is one of the easiest wins, that’s often overlooked.

It’s very possible that they liked your product, but the timing was off.

It’s very possible that this is a better time, especially with the new year.

Email 3: “Never got a response. Is this a better time”

Hi First Name,

I reached out to {you/other prospect at company} last year, but didn’t hear back. In my experience, that usually means 1 of 2 things…

1. You already have a solution for {insert the problem you solve} or
2. Timing was off.

Given that the new year is here, I wanted to see if #2 was true, and if this is a better time to discuss.

Would it be ok if I sent over a quick video on how we can help?

If a prospect didn’t respond last year, it doesn’t mean they won’t respond this year.

Acknowledge that timing is a huge part of the buying process, and give them the opportunity to tell you otherwise.

Did you have a lot of prospects ask you to follow up in Q1?
